FAQs
Do I need to take out travel insurance or is it covered by the camp?
OHS cannot cover insurance for volunteers. All volunteers must take out their own travel and medical insurance and, for those on the Equine Focus Programme, make sure this covers horse riding. OHS will register all volunteers with Okavango Air Rescue.
Do I need vaccinations? Should I take anti-malarials?
We cannot provide medical advice, all volunteers should see a doctor in good time before travelling to Botswana. This website also has useful, up to date information.
Will I see the Big 5?
The Okavango is vast and a true wilderness. Unlike in a fenced game reserve, the wildlife is not restricted and can roam as nature intended. Therefore we cannot guarantee sightings of any particular animals. That being said, the Delta is home to a huge variety of flora and fauna, and our highly skilled guides always do their utmost to make sure visitors see as much wildlife as possible.
FAQs cont’d
Why is there a fee to volunteer?
In order to run the programme we have to cover our expenses. In return for helping with a variety of camp duties, our volunteers can expect: meet and greet at Maun airport and transfers to and from camp, comfortable, private accommodation, housekeeping, laundry, three freshly cooked meals a day, all necessary training, and invaluable experience of how a camp operates. Equine volunteers will ride most days, and all volunteers will gain a huge amount of practical experience.
Can we visit other places during our stay?
Kujwana camp is isolated and it is not practical to arrange day trips from there. Rest assured, our volunteers never get bored - there is always something to do and we operate in a large area of beautiful wilderness! We are happy to make suggestions for onwards travel in Botswana after your stay at OHS.
What is the food like?
Breakfast is buffet style in the main area with fresh fruit, juices, tea & coffee, yoghurt, toast, porridge etc. Lunch is either in camp or out in the bush if you are riding with guests. It is usually salads, freshly baked bread, cold meats, quiche or similar. Dinner may be eaten with other staff or with guests. It is always healthy and hearty, sometimes inspired by local cuisine, or perhaps a delicious braii (barbeque). You definitely won’t be hungry!
