Who we are

Alex Smith and Gareth Peake took over ownership of Okavango Horse Safaris in 2025 having previously set up their own mobile safari company. They are passionate about sharing the magic of the unspoiled wilderness in Botswana.

Louise Dunn is a former Equestrian Manager at OHS who went on to work in the travel industry. Now based in the UK, she is well placed to provide support and guidance to potential volunteers.

Together they launched the OHS Volunteer Programme to give people the opportunity to stay in this incredible environment for an extended period of time, contributing to this intimate, family run camp, and enjoying total immersion in one of Africa’s most precious habitats.

About the Okavango Delta

HOW IT FORMS

The Okavango Delta is essentially a vast floodplain in the middle of the Kalahari Desert (from 2,300–5,800 sq mi depending on the time of year - to put this into context, the entire area of Wales is 8,004.70 square miles). Rain that falls on the highlands of Angola flows as the Okavango River into Botswana, never reaching the sea but instead creating the Delta, an oasis in the desert, the water eventially evaporating.

CLIMATE

The annual flood water usually arrives in the Delta between March and June each year. From June until August the general climate is dry and cool, with pleasant days and sometimes cold nights. Between September and November the heat and humidity build until the rainy season arrives from December until around February.

WILDLIFE

As you can imagine, this huge wetland area in an otherwise arid environment attracts a profusion of wildlife. The Big Five are all present, high numbers of elephant, wild dog, many types of grazing animals, particularly the red lechwe, a type of antelope that has adaptated to watery conditions. Around 400 species of bird thrive here. The crystal waters are home to 71 fish species. The Delta is unique and a mecca for wildlife enthusiasts the world over.
